Weekly News

May 14-18
Religion: This week, we continued to talk about Mary. We learned that when she was still a teenager, she married Joseph and she found out that she would be the mother of a very special baby. She also learned that her cousin Elizabeth was also going to have a baby who would be known as John the Baptist.

Reading: We worked on Unit 10: We Know a Lot! this week. We read "What Can You Do" and talked about many of the things we have learned this year. This was an interactive story which allowed us to do more than just listen to the story. We have been working on using illustrations in our readers to help us figure out unfamiliar words.. We learned the words 'with' and 'my' this week as well as the letters Qu, and J.
Make sure to help your child practice the sight words at home every night! We are now learning 2-3 letters and 3-4 words each unit so practice is crucial at home.
Please complete Yellow Practice Book pages 199-206 this week.

Please practice the following sight words (flash cards are very helpful!):
  • with, my, has, look, she, he, here, was, little, said, what, and, this, do, for, you, are, play, is, have, to, go, see, a, like, am, the, we, can, I
  • zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten
  • red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, black, brown, white, gray
  • summer, fall, winter, spring
  • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
  • September, October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August

Writing: This week we wrote about butterflies. We had the opportunity the past few weeks to watch the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly right in our classroom. We wrote about some of the things we know about butterflies.

Printing Group: We all are now on seasonal poems and reinforcing some printing skills we learned! Way to go everyone!

Math: We began working on number patterns to 100. We have been looking at hundreds chats and seeing all the patterns within it. We counted by 2s, 5s, and 10s on a hundreds chart and worked on counting large quantities quickly.

Science: In class, we continued talking about dinosaurs. We have been working on a book that talks about a meat eater dinosaur coming after plant eaters. We will be wrapping it up this week.

Aiden was our scientist this week. We learned about complementary or opposite colors. Aiden brought in some pictures that he asked us to stare at for 30 seconds. When we looked at a blank wall, we saw the pictures in the opposite colors. Some of us were able to do it very easily, others got a bit frustrated (like doing the magic eye books!) It was a very neat experiment to watch the kids do. Great work, Aiden!
